This pickguard is based on that but has a couple of unique features. The pickups are Fralin P-92s, which are designed to sound like P-90s. Two short coils – one for the plain strings and one for the wound strings – are made in an RWRP configuration so they’re hum-canceling. Fralin employs the same design thinking with their Split-Blade pickups for Strats and Teles. Two short coils butted end-to-end provide hum-canceling, but essentially still act as single coils in the sense that each string is being sensed by a single coil. The 5-way wiring is thus. Position 4: Neck + Middle. Position 3: Neck + Bridge. Position 2: Bridge + Middle. This gives you classic Gibson-esque wiring in the 1/3/5 positions, while providing some Fender-esque options in 2/4, where you get two “single coils” wired in Parallel, like a Strat. We say “single coils” in quotes because of course they are hum-canceling pickups, but designed to sound like single coils. All positions are hum-canceling. But wait, there’s more! See that pushbutton switch between the volume/tone and 5-way? That is a pushbutton switch (push/push; it pops up in one position and stays down in the other). That switch toggles the middle switch position (Position 3 above) between the two P-92s wired in parallel, and the two P-92s wired in series. Combining pickups in series rather than parallel yields warmer, midrange-heavy tonality, with more punch. While this might not be that desirable in a guitar with two humbuckers, it could be just what you’re looking for when you’re combining two pickups that are voiced as single-coils. It’s a little girthier. Like stepping on the gas. This one was expensive to make: the pickups were expensive, the custom pickguard with laser-cut, full-back metal shield was expensive, the Callaham knobs were expensive, the elaborate wiring was expensive. That’s a good deal. Some of the parts aren’t even available any longer so you would not be able to duplicate this, and you will definitely be the only player on the block with one, so think how cool you’ll look! Installation is solder-free and will take minutes, unless you need to do some routing. Many Fender bodies have universal routing – either a “swimming pool” rout or routing for humbuckers in all three positions, so with these you might be fine, but we can’t say for certain. But no soldering, as we include a Switchcraft jack with leads attached, and these plug into the board with solder-free terminals. The only thing you’ll need to worry about is your string ground, which will probably be a wire coming from your trem claw. You’ll probably need to solder that to the back on one of the pots. So long as no routing is required, installation should literally take 10 minutes or so. The pickguard profile is dead-on Fender’s profile, and the 11 mounting screws are precisely right for mounting to a Fender body.
